Line-up
Turn Back, the band's third studio album is an ode to the classic sextet structure, and a more consistent, stronger effort with a harder edge. The edgier sound of Turn Back was a reflection of the growth of the band. The drummer Bobby Kimball's increasing ability to play was evident in the vocal delivery of Joseph Williams, who had become more confident and mature. David Paich's work was more refined, sharper and less cloying than earlier efforts.
After touring to promote their album, the band recorded their Amsterdam live concert that was released on Eagle Records as a 2-CD set titled Falling In Between. The group released a new studio album a few months after and embarked on a world tour to promote it. During this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.
In 1998, Paich and Lukather started searching through old demos and tapes in search of a new album featuring songs that had never been recorded before. The album was released in the form of a double-album called Then & Now in 2001. It was the first album in the band's history not to feature any single song that had the word "A" in its title. It also included one previously unreleased track, "Kari-Anne".
By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity.
